Everything you need to know about Cagiva

Cagiva take on the Dakar Rally

Launched in 1978, Cagiva took the motorcycling world by storm with the launch of two racing bikes that were ridden by Gianfrance Bonera and Marco Lucchinelli. After buying a factory from Harley-Davidson, Cagiva were producing over 40,000 motorbikes annually by 1979.

They focused on producing 125 cc to 350 cc bikes, but there was also a focus on off-road motorbikes which was developed over the years before launching the WMX series. There was always a passion for off-road bikes including the two wins at the Dakar Rally in 1990 and 1994 by Edi Orioli on the Cagiva Elefant.

Cagiva also tried their hand at MotoGP and signed Eddie Lawson in 1991, who went on to see their first victory at the 1992 Hungarian GP. Notably, John Kocinski also won a GP on the Cagiva, and finished third overall in 1994.

No new models since 2012

Cagiva continued to buy out numerous competitors including Harley, Ducati, Moto Morini and Husqvarna. Although Cagiva had many different owners over the years, it finally ended up back with the son of the founder and former own Claudio Castiglioni in 2009.

Sadly, Cagiva shut their doors a few years ago, with the business focusing on the production of MV Agusta.

Although there hasn’t been any new Cagiva models released since 2012, they still remain extremely popular in the market including the Raptor and Mito 125cc. So you might not be able to pick up a new one anymore, but you’ll still find some good deals in the market on:

Mito SP525
River 500
Raptor 650
Raptor 1000
Canyon 500
