All you need to know about MV Agusta

Dive into the world of MV Agusta...

Originally known as ‘Meccanica Verghera Agusta’, MV Agusta was founded in 1945 near Milan, Italy. ‘Meccanica’ stands for Mechanics and ‘Verghera’ after the hamlet where the first MVs were made.

MV Agusta begans as an off-shoot of the Agusta aviation company formed by Count Giovanni Agusta. Subsequently, when the Count died in 1927 the company was left to his wife and four sons. Sons Vincenzo and Domenico created MV Agusta at the end of the Second World War to fill the need for cheap, efficient transport post-war.

MV Agusta are known for their small, cafe racer-style motorcycles (125 – 150 cc), however in later years began to produce large-engined motorcycles in limited quantities due to the decline in small motorcycle sales.

Like many other manufacturers, MV Agusta took their motorcycle racing extremely seriously, especially their sensational win by Franco Bertoni during the 1948 Italian Grand Prix, changing their commercial slogan to: “Racing experience at the service of mass production.”

By 1956, MV Agusta began to dominate all classes and overall won 270 Grand Prix motorcycle races, with legendary riders including; Giacomo Agostini, Mike Hailwood, Phil Read, Carlo Ubbiali, Gary Hocking and John Surtees. Not only that, MV Agusta have won the Tourist Trophy 34 times at the Isle of Man TT.

MV Agusta have made a few appearances at races in recent years including the British Superbike Championships in 2013.
