Everything you need to know about Electric Motorbikes

Brush up on your Electric Motorbike knowledge...

It wasn’t going to be long until the futuristic visions of an electric motorbike model became a reality, especially with the car world already thriving. However, the first patent for an electric bike was submitted back in 1895 and it has blossomed since then.

There are even racing events dedicated to electric models including Formula E and TT Zero event at the Isle of Man TT, which is growing more popular and competitive each year.

But, it’s understandable that it might not be as widely accepted by the biking community, it goes against the grain of what motorcycling is all about – the power, speed and most importantly the sound – but there are some positives to owning an electric model.

If you’re looking for a fun and practical commuting machine then switching to electric could be the move for you, especially if you’re riding in London; congestion and emission charges are not applicable to these models. With charging points popping up in your local shopping centre car parks, all you need to do is plug in, swipe your card (which is linked to your bank account) and let it charge whilst you pick up your weekly shop.

Recently, we’ve seen electric-only motorcycle manufacturers popping onto the scene including Zero Motorcycles and NIU Electric Scooters, to name just a few. It’s obviously that there’s a market out there because even the likes of VespaBMW and even  Harley Davidson with the launch of the brand new Harley LiveWire, are now attempting venture into the market. Starting prices for a new model can range from £10,000 upwards with max speeds of over 100mph and mile range of up to 120+ miles – not bad at all.

Please Note – To insure an electric moped/motorcycle through Devitt, our Insurers require you to have the correct licence legally required to ride the motorcycle.

Things like security (locks, chains, alarms, immobilisers and securing your motorbike in a safe place), doing less mileage, taking an advanced riding course and taking advantage of our Excess Protect policy could all help to lower your premium even further – putting more money in your pocket for all those trips! What license do I need to ride an Electric Motorbike?

Generally electric mopeds are restricted to 28mph (45kmh). These are viewed in the same way as a 50cc petrol moped. As a moped, they can be ridden by any rider 16 or over who has either passed a CBT course or has category AM or P on their existing driver licence. These are classed as L1e-B.

Car drivers who passed their test before February 2001 generally will have this category AM or P already on their licence, or have a full motorcycle licence, and are not required to take a CBT course (please ensure you check this yourself). To insure an electric moped/motorcycle through Devitt, our Insurers require you to have the correct licence legally required to ride the motorcycle.

Electric scooters / motorbikes that are capable of speeds in excess of 28mph / 45kmph are classed as L3e-A1. There is no speed restriction however you must be 17 or above and have passed a CBT course OR have a full motorcycle licence.

Please view full licence requirements on the government website here.
