What you need to know about insurance

Insurance guide overview

We all know that insurance isn’t the most exciting thing in the world – in fact, it’s quite dull. But it’s one of those things that you need to have just in case the worst should happen. Some insurance products are compulsory by law – things like vehicle insurance for cars, bikes and vans, while others are just recommended, like contents insurance for the home (although many mortgage brokers will make it a requirement of your mortgage that you have buildings insurance). Here at Devitt, we try to make the process of purchasing insurance products a little bit easier and aim to provide you with all of the information you need to choose the right products and the right cover for you – which is why we’ve put together this little insurance guide.

Brokers, comparison sites & insurers

What is a broker?

An insurance broker is an agency or company that works with a number of insurers to find the best deal and the very best product to suit your needs. The job of an insurance broker is to explain the ins and outs of each policy so that you can easily understand all of the choices made available to you – basically, to put everything into layman’s terms. The amount of insurers that each broker works with will differ massively from broker to broker, but all you really need to know is that the broker works with the top insurance companies in the UK, or that they can secure the best value products and policies on the market – after all, you don’t want to spend more than you have to.

What is an insurer?

An insurer is just that – an insurance company that provides the insurance products, policies and cover that you need. If you need to make a claim, your insurer will decide whether or not to pay out.  Your insurer will always be the one to fulfil the claim, not the broker or the comparison site.

What is a comparison site?

Comparison sites pull up information from insurers around the web to provide you with a multitude of quotes. Although comparison sites can be useful in terms of speed, as they pull up quotes within a couple of minutes, they don’t tend to offer any additional support or information. Not all quotes will be accurate, either – when you get through to the insurer, you may well have to pay more than the price advertised on the comparison site.
