First Look: 2022 KTM 1290 Super Duke GT

Published: November 24, 2021

KTM has a long history of making bikes that are packed with both performance and practicality. Its 990 SuperMoto Touring SMT started the trend in 2009, matching the brilliantly mad 990 SM with some optional luggage and comfy riding position. And ever since, the firm has been improving the breed of practical, tour-able versions of its powerful adventure and naked bikes.

And here’s the latest: the 2022 Super Duke 1290 GT. The basic Super Duke 1290 is one of the sharpest, most aggressive of the modern super-naked roadster, and is maybe a surprising base for a Grand Touring bike. Nonetheless, it’s been a big hit for KTM since its launch in 2016, adding semi-hard luggage, a more comfy riding position, softer suspension adjustment and a dash more wind protection, plus bigger tank and other touring tweaks to the basic Super Duke.

For 2022, the GT gets the new Euro5 version of the 1,301cc V-twin LC8 engine first shown in the 2022 Super Duke, but with a slightly less wild peak power output: 175bhp instead of 180bhp, with stronger midrange.

On the touring kit front, there are new settings for the WP APEX semi-active suspension front and rear, that let you set the suspension up for four different real-life riding situations,: RIDER, RIDER & PILLION, RIDER & LUGGAGE, or RIDER, PILLION & LUGGAGE. The semi-active forks also incorporate a standard anti-dive function. The wheels are also new, with lighter construction that saves 1kg of rotating, unsprung mass, and the rims are fitted with new Continental ContiSportAttack 4 tyres.

The GT also gets a massive new 7” TFT LCD colour dashboard, new switchgear, and a new navigation  system with turn-by-turn plus instructions, plus Bluetooth phone integration. Touring is made even easier by a huge 23-litre fuel tank, and there are loads of options for luggage, screens, heated grips and much more. The new KTM Super Duke 1290 GT will be on sale in January, price TBC. More info www.ktm.com
