The Scrambler 800 is one of those bikes that you just have to try before you judge it. It’s much more fun to ride than you’d expect just from reading the spec sheet. On paper, it’s a middleweight roadster, with average power (73bhp), slightly chunky weight (180kg dry) and a hefty price tag (around £10,350). But on the road, it’s nippy, agile, easy to handle and a proper laugh to ride.

This new Urban Motard version keeps all the good stuff from the basic Scrambler 800 range –  including the air-cooled desmodromic V-twin motor with two-valves per cylinder, and a torquey power delivery – and adds neat urban street styling. The white and GP Red paint has graffiti-esque logos, complementing the flat-tracker style side panel number boards and supermoto-styled high mudguard on the front end.

The Urban Motard has the tech where it needs it: fuel injection with 50mm throttle body, cornering Bosch ABS, USB socket, LCD dash with gear and fuel indicator, LED lighting and an integrated Bluetooth smartphone link.

The running gear is decent stuff too: radial Brembo four-piston front caliper with 330mm disc, and decent Kayaba suspension (41mm USD fork and preload-adjust rear monoshock). The spoked alloy rims carry Pirelli Diablo Rosso III sports rubber, in 120/70 17 front and 180/55 17 rear sizes. A steel tube trellis frame holds it all together, and the overall chassis package is a simple, fun, easy affair.
