Yamaha FZ1 Fazer Bike Overview
Yamaha’s FZ1 Fazer features a high speciality chassis with a powerful R1 engine. While the company markets the bike as a sports bike, it in fact doubles up as a city motorcycle as well as a more than capable sports touring bike. It packs a powerful punch and is one of the finest premium sports bike available in the market.
The use of a R1 engine is one of the latest technological developments of its period and is known for its reliability. The 2006 models took some practice to get accustomed to as they had fuel injection that was sudden and left the rider in a bit of a shock. The issue was resolved in the 2007 bikes which are steadier to ride. The high bars give the bike a good feel, which would have been better if there was a tad more of power on the low and midrange.
The suspensions are top notch which make the bike smooth over bumps and potholes or uneven surfaces. If you have the right tyres mounted on the bike, turning corners and overall handling is excellent. The braking is first class and smooth with instant stopping power. The only problem is that there is limited ground clearance on this bike.
The bike is generally very reliable with a robust engine which requires low maintenance. On the flipside as with older Fazer models, the bolts and brackets need examination periodically for wear and tear. This is more so if you use the bike extensively for touring purposes over long distances. Other than that you have a durable and reliable bike that will last for many summers to come.

The FZ1-N feels very nimble and capable, the suspension is good front and rear however not the same quality as the R1 but more than necessary for in town and country riding.
An R1 engine in a versatile frame, there is more power than you can use from low speed and minimal throttle right the way up the rev range! Imagine the R1 without the high revving necessary for power!
It’s a naked litre bike. It doesn’t do 200 miles to a tank for me, more like 100 to 120. But this is a fun bike not one you’d buy for its economy!
Fantastic build quality typical of Yamaha. All components feel and look as though this is a bike that will age well.
I’ve upgraded my brakes to braided lines however that’s purely cosmetic as the standard brake lines are adequate as are the Yamaha spot calipers. Progressive stopping power and slow speed control is brilliant.
Being the first large capacity naked bike I've owned it is is surprisingly nimble and handles well.
Again, top notch as far as performance is concerned and is as easy to ride at lower speeds as it is when pushing on a little.
Having a Z750 before the FZ1 the running cost is marginally higher, but who's counting when the sun is shining and you're riding to the coast
Touch wood it's reliability has been top notch and is as well built as most bikes of it's era.
I believe the front brakes were upgrade to the R1 units and couple with braided hoses they stop as quickly as you'd expect.
