Being a new rider doesn’t mean that you’re an unsafe rider but you won’t have any No claims Discount (NCD) to help lower your premiums yet but there are plenty of other ways you can help to keep your first year’s premium as low as possible.

Insurers often reward riders for additional security and safety measures, so make sure you let us know what security you have in place and where your bike is stored.

One of the most simple yet effective ways of helping reduce your premium is to take an advanced riding course. Take a look at BikeSafe, the national police motorcycle training scheme, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) and Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS). Doing this shows insurers that you’re safe on the road and it will also improve your riding skills helping you to be a better motorcyclist.

If you are new to riding then it’s best to start on a less powerful cc machine to build your experience, if you opt for a powerful sports bike as a new motorcycle rider the likelihood is your premium will be in the higher ranges.

The same will apply for an expensive bike, even if it’s not that powerful as you have no experience of looking after a motorcycle and therefore an insurer may have to rate you in the higher range until you build your NCD.
