Being a new rider doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a young rider. Many riders start at a later stage in life and see riding a motorcycle as a hobby, rather than to commute.
Being a new rider doesn’t mean you’re an unsafe rider either, but there are plenty of ways to keep your first year’s premium down. Whether you’re looking for third party fire and theft or fully comprehensive cover, we can find a new rider insurance plan to suit you by comparing quotes from some of the UK’s leading insurance providers to bring you the best-value premium.
One of the most simple yet effective ways of reducing your premium is to take an advanced riding course. Take a look at BikeSafe, the national police motorcycle training scheme, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) and Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS). Doing this shows insurers that you’re safe on the road and it will improve your riding making you a better motorcyclist.
If you’ve just passed your motorcycle or moped test and want to get as clued up as possible before you hit the road, take a look at our top tips for new riders.

Additional security measures, such as keeping your bike secure overnight by putting it in a garage or shed, can also help reduce your first-time bike insurance cost. Adding an alarm or immobiliser will help when you’re out and about for extra protection, and good old-fashioned locks and chains can provide extra security if you can’t secure your bike through other means.
What additional extras can I add to my New Rider policy?
Being a new rider, you may want to take extra protection on top of your basic cover. Devitt has a wide range of additional policies and products for further protection and peace of mind.
Excess Protect could help to lower your premiums, while Personal Accident and Personal Accident with Leathers and Helmet will give you added protection in the event of an accident.

How much is insurance for a new motorcycle driver?
There are many factors which contribute to your new rider motorcycle insurance premium. The fact that you are inexperienced in riding will not be as ideal as being an experienced rider, so you should make sure that the you everything you can do improve the other elements of your profile to try and keep your new rider premium down as much as possible.
This could include making sure your bike is secure, the best thing for this is a garage but also use security devices such as a chain and ground anchor, disc lock etc.
If you are new to riding then it’s best to start on a less powerful cc machine to build your experience, if you opt for a powerful sports bike as a new motorcycle rider the likelihood is your premium will be in the higher ranges.
The same will apply for an expensive bike, even if it’s not that powerful as you have no experience of looking after a motorcycle and therefore an insurer may have to rate you in the higher range until you build your NCD.
