An insight into Piaggio

Find out everything you need to know about Piaggio

Piaggio & C. SpA is an Italian manufacturer perhaps best known for its iconic Vespa scooters and mopeds. It operates seven brands in total and – apart from the Vespa – its two-wheelers are popular within the commuter segment of the global motorcycle market.

The Piaggio company is nestled in the Tuscan countryside between Florence and Pisa. It transformed itself from a company for naval supplies to one which specialises in the production of two-wheeled vehicles.

The Piaggio Ciao came into being in 1967, however the brand was producing two-wheelers much earlier than that. In fact, the Vespa model was introduced to the market back in 1946, after much time was spent on the scooter’s concept and design. At the time, Enrico Piaggio’s vision was clear and simple – to create affordable and modern transport for the Italian people.

In 1967, Piaggio experienced its first success with the Ciao model which it dubbed the forefather of the modern moped. Its next notable success came with the Bravo moped between 1973 and 1978. After that Piaggio enjoyed a string of good performers in the Cosa, Superbravo and Grillo.

The Sfera was introduced in 1990, breaking the mould of modern two-wheel transportation. This was the first scooter to feature any plastic bodywork. The brand’s most recent triumph was the launch of the Piaggio X10, which seamlessly combines high performance and modern comforts.

Vespa remains the classic scooter model. However, Piaggio is all about innovation and contemporary designs.
