What you need to know about Super Sport Bikes

Super sport motorbikes come under the overall category of sport bikes and they are perfect for riders who are after speed as a top priority.  Generally, the term is used to denote a middleweight model with engine displacement of around 600-750cc.  Some models in this range will qualify for racing competitions and may have purposely been built for the race track.  Often, the term super bike and super sport are used interchangeably to describe any high performance machines.

It is worth noting that motorcycle classes are not officially defined, which means a model could be described as a super sport by some and a super bike by others.

Motorcycles with the engine displacement of 600-750cc have been around for a long time.  However, the point when super sports motorbikes became globally recognised was in 1990, when it was introduced as a support class to the Superbike World Championship.

What's the difference between a Super Sport and Sports Bike?

Enthusiasts will argue that it is an erroneous approach to classify a bike based solely on its engine displacement.  Other things to look out for may include the type of engine it has, its weight and its intended use.

When comparing a super sport to a sport bike, a super sport is basically a race bike built for competition, and as such they are designed to be more comfortable on the track than in long range touring.  The riding position is more compact and more forward resulting in the rider feeling a bit more pressure on their wrists.

In contrast, although a sport bike still has good speed and performance, they are designed to be more comfortable for riding longer distances.  They are not as powerful as the super sports and normally feature a heavier frame so that it can handle more weight that may come from a pillion passenger and/or luggage.

Other features such as suspension, electronics, tyres and general materials tend to be different on the super sport to ensure it has lighter weight.

Super sport bikes are very sleek by design and will have full fairings, which means they feature fibreglass or plastic engine cover.  Super sport motorbikes have a seating position where the rider is heavily leaned over the fuel tank, giving the rider and the machine a very aggressive look.

For those hooked on speed and performance, there is no doubt that super sport machines deliver both.  However, this type of motorbike requires skill and experience to ride safely and will not be suitable for long distance touring.

What are examples of Super Sport Bikes?

There are plenty of super sport bikes out there, here are a few examples:

  • Yamaha YZF-R6
  • Suzuki GSX-R600
  • MV Agusta F3 675
  • Triumph Daytona 675R
  • Kawasaki ZX-6R
  • Honda CBR600RR
