More information about Gilera

Founded in 1909 by Giuseppe Gilera, this Italian motorcycle manufacturer is renowned for its passion in the racing field.

In 1935, Gilera successfully acquired the rights to the Rondine four-cylinder engine, which rocketed its racing machines for almost 40 years. Engines ranged from 100cc to 500cc and were fitted with four-stroke engines, which were developed by Gilera.

A famous Gilera machine is the 1939 Saturno, inspired by the pre-war Gilera VTEGS 500cc. However, it was in the years after World War II that Gilera dominated the racing scene, winning the 500cc road racing world championships six times in eight years.

Gilera joins the Piaggio Group

Glory on the track came to an end after 1957 due to a gentleman’s agreement with other Italian motorcycle makers. In light of falling motorcycle sales after the war, these competing brands agreed to quit Grand Prix racing as a cost-cutting measure.

In 1969, Gilera was purchased by Piaggio. In recent years, it has produced a wide range of scooters and mopeds that are both stylish and well-priced – including the ‘supermotard’ Gilera SMT, an off-road moped that’s fit for city life but can handle bumpy roads too.
