Chinese brand has been busy launching big bikes lately – but QJMotor has some slick learner machines available – like the new COV125 S and X

Up until quite recently, the 125cc sector was the main area for operation of most Chinese brands. Entry-level machinery in the lightweight class was an obvious opening point for budget-focused firms, and there’s been a load of cheap and cheerful eighth-litre bikes getting people into bikes at a low price.

Recently, of course, Chinese firms have been moving up into the larger-capacity, more premium sectors, but as these two new bikes from QJMotor show, the 125 class is still important.

The base of the COV125 range is a modern 125cc fuel-injected liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, four-valve SOHC engine, that puts out the maximum power allowed on A1 category machines: 15hp or 11kW at 9,500rpm. The peak torque is 12.1Nm at 7,000rpm and there’s a six-speed gearbox to keep it on the boil. That compact motor is bolted into a standard steel tube cradle frame, with decent running gear.

The suspension package uses a pair of 43mm upside-down telescopic forks with a rear multi-link mono-shock with preload adjustment on the rear. Braking is handled by a beefy superbike-sized 320mm wavy front disc and a 220mm rear disc, with a Bosch dual-channel ABS system. All-up weight is impressively low at just 129kg wet, but the fuel capacity is a bit tight at 8 litres, even with the frugal fuel consumption of a 125cc four-stroke machine.

The main differences between the S and X models come on the wheels and tyres: the X is an off-road biased machine, with a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheel setup shod with CST dual-purpose tyres. It has a tall 920mm seat height and a massive 310mm ground clearance, and QJMotor says it’s been specially engineered to tackle trails and rough terrain.

The S is more of a supermoto design: it changes the offroad spoked wheels and rubber for a pair of 17-inch rims and sportier CST road tyres, which also lowers the seat height to a more accessible 860mm.

The long-travel suspension with the smaller wheels and sticky road rubber is a classic Supermoto recipe, and should make for a super-sharp urban tool around town – though you’ll not want to take on any motorway trips we imagine.

QJMotor has prioritised equipment on its other bikes, and the COV machines have a solid spec list. The rider interface features a clear LCD digital display, and both models come equipped with full LED lighting for the headlight, indicators, and taillights.

Practical touches include strong, thick-walled alloy Fat Bar handlebars with integrated handguards and a lightweight high-mount MX-style silencer.

Both bikes are available in White, Black, or Red, with the QJMOTOR COV 125 X priced at £2,999 while the QJMOTOR COV 125 S is available for £2,799 (both plus on the road charges).
