Our Story
Devitt Insurance was founded in 1936 in by Howson Foulger Devitt at a time when motorcycles were growing rapidly in popularity and insurance was far from straightforward. From the very beginning, Devitt set out to do things differently — making insurance more accessible, practical, and rider-focused.
That spirit of innovation has guided the business for nearly a century.
A Pioneering Beginning
In 1936, Devitt launched the groundbreaking “DU” motorcycle insurance scheme, allowing riders to arrange insurance directly through motorcycle dealers and ride away the same day. This was a major step forward for the industry and helped establish Devitt as a trusted name among bikers across the UK.
As motorcycling culture grew, so did Devitt’s reputation as a specialist broker that truly understood its customers.
Growing Through the Decades
Throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, Devitt expanded its dealer networks and developed new ways to support riders and motorists. The “DU” scheme evolved into the Devitt Dealer Association, strengthening relationships with manufacturers and dealers nationwide.
By the late 20th century, Devitt had grown into a well-established insurance broker offering a wide range of products, while still retaining its specialism in motorcycles.
A Modern Insurance Business
The 1990s and 2000s marked a period of transformation as Devitt Insurance Services Limited was formed to bring together its personal and affinity business lines. During this time, the company became part of larger insurance groups, benefiting from scale while maintaining its specialist focus.
In 2011, Devitt returned to independent ownership following a management buyout, reinforcing its commitment to customer service, flexibility, and innovation.
Entering a New Chapter
In 2022, Devitt joined Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., one of the world’s leading insurance brokers. This marked an exciting new chapter in the company’s history, combining Devitt’s specialism with Gallagher’s extensive insurer relationships and resources.
