Triumph expands entry-level roadster range with new Trident 800
The Trident 660 has been a solid success for Triumph: it offers no-nonsense entry-level light-middleweight performance, in a distinctive Hinckley style, at a tempting price. And now there’s a slightly beefier option, which the firm hopes will do the same job in the upper-middleweight sector.

The Trident 800 uses much of the tech pioneered on last year’s Tiger Sport 800: a new 798cc triple engine making around 113bhp, in a simple steel tube perimeter frame with good quality suspension and braking components. But it uses that setup in a road-focused design, with the same styling cues as the 660 model.

The 798cc triple motor takes elements from the firm’s other models, but was all-new when launched in the Tiger Sport. It’s a compact unit, with fairly high tune: 13.2:1 compression, oversquare 78×55.7mm bore and stroke, triple throttle bodies (the entry-level Triumph triples use a single throttle body) and a 113bhp peak power figure at 10,750rpm.

It’s been a hit in the Tiger Sport, and should be just as good here, giving the Trident option to riders who want a bit more in terms of grunt.
Chassis-wise, you get 41mm upside-down Showa Big Piston-Separate Function forks with adjustable compression and rebound, and a rear Showa monoshock with preload and rebound adjustment.

Braking is handled by Triumph-branded twin 4-piston radial calipers gripping 310mm discs, with braided steel lines, and there’s a lovely gull-style cast aluminium rear swingarm.
Triumph’s proud of its tech offerings these days: and the Trident 800 has a solid spec. There’s the firm’s lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS and Traction Control, the Triumph Shift Assist up/down quickshifter, and handy cruise control.

A round 3.5” TFT colour dash and new switchgear controls the Bluetooth phone interface for navigation music and calls, and there’s LED lighting all round. It’s a good looking bike we reckon, and comes in three colour options: Ash Grey with Diablo Red detailing, Carnival Red with Graphite accents, and Jet Black, with the neat bellypan rounding off the sporty feel.

Complaints from the spec sheet? We’re not enormous fans of the 14-litre fuel capacity, although the claimed 60.1mpg should give over 150 miles between fills (until you start to use all the 113bhp output of course).

The new Trident 800 is priced to sell, as they say, at just £9,195, which seems like decent value. It’s in the shops in March, and will be on show at the NEC Motorcycle Live show next month. More info: www.triumph.co.uk
