Italian exotica maker repositions 147bhp 800cc F3 R triple as ‘budget’ supersports option – but at £13,900 it’s still a premium purchase…

Everything costs a fortune these days – whether it’s a pint of lager in London town, or a litre of E5 unleaded on the M6 motorway. But Italian exotic bike maker MV Agusta reckons it’s trying to make its machines more competitive in terms of cost, with a relaunch of its F3 R 800 upper-middleweight sportsbike with a revised pricetag of €16,000 (around £13,900).

For that you get the firm’s inline-triple engine, making a solid 147bhp at 13,300rpm with a super-torquey delivery, in a sweet chassis packed with high-end running gear. The 798cc DOHC 12-valve three cylinder engine boasts a contra-rotating crankshaft design, with cassette-style removable gearbox, and titanium inlet and exhaust valves.

Peak torque is 88Nm at 10,100rpm. The MV Agusta MIVICS engine management system uses six injectors with 50mm Mikuni throttle bodies and ride-by-wire throttle control.

You also get cruise control, Bluetooth, GPS and immobiliser functions, all accessed by a 5.5” full colour LCD dash, and a new nine-disc clutch design claims to give smoother gear changes while reducing the effort required at the lever.

Suspension is by Marzocchi fully-adjustable USD forks up front and Sachs rear monoshock, also fully adjustable for spring preload plus compression and rebound damping. Brakes are Brembo’s finest Stylema radial four-piston front calipers with dual 320mm discs.

Wet weight without fuel is a decent 192.5kg, and overall, it’s an impressive spec, even with that chunky price tag.
