Scooter and moped insurance overview

Scooter and mopeds are usually cheaper to run and tax but like any other type of bike insurance, they can be insured as Third Party Only, Third Party Fire & Theft or Fully Comprehensive, depending on the amount of cover you need. Take a look at our Motorbike Insurance Guide if you need more information about what these levels of cover will provide.

If you wish to have additional cover with your scooter / moped insurance then you have the option to include Legal Expenses cover, Personal Accident (PA) cover, PA with Helmet and Leathers cover and RAC breakdown for motorbikes. You also have options of Excess Protect (which could help reduce your premium), Key Protection and Substitute Bike. Take a look to the left menu to find out more.

Scooter & moped insurance can often be cheaper than other types of motorbike cover due to the fact that they’re cheaper to repair in the event of an accident.

Put simply, what is a scooter?

Specific type of motorbike style, 50cc and above, with what is called a ‘step-through’ where there is space for you to sit your feet together. A Vespa is popular and iconic scooter, often with multiple wing mirrors, which has cult status through films such as Quadrophenia and its links with ‘mods’. Scooters can come with 125cc engines, which are perfect for commuters in cities looking for a speedy journey beating rush hour traffic and avoiding city congestion.

Put simply, what is a moped?

A moped is any motorbike under 50cc, sometimes with limits on their speed. They’re good for commuting, suitable for cities and you get good value from your fuel. Mopeds are often a popular choice for younger people, especially 16 year olds who are allowed to ride a motorbike below 50cc.
