Parking tax on motorbikes and scooters in Westminster
Devitt fully supports the next demonstration
Wednesday 1st July will see another demonstration by the biking community to show their objections against Westminster City Council’s controversial motorcycle parking levy.
Fully supporting the campaign to abolish parking fees in Westminster is specialist motorcycle insurance broker, Devitt Insurance.
William Hughes, Managing Director of Devitt Insurance comments, “We know what this means to our customers and the biking community, which is why Devitt has joined as a supporter of the campaign. It’s just another cost that motorcyclists need to fork out for, which isn’t good in this current economic climate. We recently launched a campaign to ‘Keep Britain Biking’, putting the spotlight on the benefits of two wheels in credit crunch Britain. In a national survey by the Department of Transport*, 62% of respondents said they used their bike for commuting. Therefore, for those working in Westminster it would mean they incur an additional cost of £150 a year.
“It is very frustrating that bikers are being penalised for using a greener mode of transport, in an already congested city. And you can’t help thinking where will it stop? Will other cities look to introduce it if the scheme is made permanent?”
Since August 4, 2008 the council has charged motorcyclists and scooter riders £1.50-a-day to park in Westminster or £150 for an annual permit.
