Devitt Calls for More Support from the Government to encourage motorcycling as part of National Motorcycle Week 12th to 18th July 2009
With pressure on the UK to cut CO2 emissions and the recession hitting the consumer pocket, specialist motorcycle insurance broker, Devitt believes there is a clear need for Government to promote the benefits of using two wheels as a cost-effective and greener mode of transport.
Supporting National Motorcycle Week and Ride to Work Day on 15th July, Devitt’s ‘Keep Britain Biking’ campaign reports that a staggering 90% of its customers* would like to see the Government doing more to encourage motorcycling and introduce financial reasons to motivate Britain to keep biking.
William Hughes, Managing Director of Devitt Insurance explains, “Using a motorcycle helps cut pollution, congestion and journey times as well as being cost effective and convenient, making it an ideal mode of transportation. To help promote the benefits of biking, especially for commuting purposes, it would be great to see more incentives, like the Government’s cycle to work tax free initiative for peddle bikes.”
In a survey of over 1000 Devitt bikers*, 55% said they would like to see cheaper road tax or indeed, have road tax for motorcyclists abolished altogether. Furthermore, 24% said that motorcyclists should be able to use all bus lanes, 19% wanted the cost of bikes to be made cheaper through tax breaks and 17% wanted to see the introduction of free parking.
"There has already been a huge backlash from bikers on the introduction of the parking fees by Westminster council,” concludes Hughes. “This clearly shows how passionate bikers are about being financially penalised and the need to introduce more positive incentives to encourage using a motorbike as an economical and eco-friendly way to travel.”
