INSURANCE CLAIMS COUNT REVEALS THE SAFEST BIKERS IN THE UK
Romford, 26th September 2006 -In a bid to end
the age old battle of who reigns supreme when it comes to safety
on the roads, leading specialist motorcycle insurance broker Devitt
has researched its claims made throughout 2005 in order to discover
whether men or women are the safest riders. The results are in,
have been counted and verified, and Devitt can reveal the winner
is… women – though not by much.
For the last two consecutive years (2004, 2005), women riders have
claimed less on their insurance than their male counterparts. However,
claims for all riders are down on the previous year with only 9%
of women making a claim in 2005, compared with 10% of men.
Within the 25-55 year old rider segment, the number of claims remains
steady for the third year in succession with an average 8% of both
male and female riders alike making claims.
By contrast, younger riders are far more likely to claim, with
the worst offenders being 19 year-old women and men of 16-19 years
old. 17% of policyholders in these groups made a claim during 2005.
However, it is not all bad news for younger riders. They are reducing
their number of claims faster than any other age group. In fact
the claims figures for 20 year-old men went down by 5% in 2005 whilst
their female counterparts made a 6% reduction.
The adage of experience coming with age is also borne out by the
figures. Devitt’s research shows that riders in the 60 years
plus age group are the most careful. Devitt’s older male riders
have kept their claims down to 4% for the second year running, whilst
the older female riders have actually reduced their claims, from
5% to 3%, over the same period.
Devitt’s Deputy Managing Director, William Hughes, says that
the important news is that we are becoming a safer motorcycling
nation:
“Claims have been creeping up in recent years, but in 2005
they were down for both men and women nearly 2% from 2004, which
is positive news for everyone out there on the roads,” he
says.
“Although our figures continue to show that younger riders
are still the most vulnerable, it is good to see that it is the
younger riders who are showing the greatest signs of improvement.”
