DEVITT SUPPORTS THINK! ROAD SAFETY
The
Government has a target to reduce the number of people killed or
seriously injured on the roads by 40% by 2010. Broadly, the targets
of this strategy are being met but motorcyclists continue to be
disproportionately involved in fatal accidents. In 2005, motorcycles
represented 1% of road traffic but motorcyclists accounted for 18%
of all fatalities.
The THINK! motorcycle safety campaign targets both urban commuters
(motorists as well as motorcyclists) and leisure riders with specific
safety messages. However, motorcycle casualty figures remain high
and with 379 motorcyclists killed and 2,103 motorcyclists seriously injured in 2006, there is no room for complacency.
