BIKERS BEWARE - THE FASHION POLICE ARE OUT TO GET YOU!
When
it comes to knowing “what not to wear”, a couple of
bikers have hopefully learnt a lesson or two thanks to their motorcycle
makeover last month.
A competition, run by TWO and Devitt, asked bikers to say why they
should be picked to have a Trinny and Susannah-style makeover, swapping
their old gear for the very latest in helmets, leathers and boots.
Winners Julie Hanks-Elliott and Andy Dyks’ competition entries
were touching – but the “before” pictures speak
for themselves!
Although style (or lack of it!) was a key factor, there was also
a serious safety element to the competition. Andy’s regular
outfit of jeans, gardening gloves and old combat jacket offered
him no protection whatsoever in the event of an accident. Julie’s
worn leathers had become thin and her helmet dated.
Devitt’s
Managing Director William Hughes said: “We had a lot of fun
working with Andy and Julie and there is no doubt they both look
great in the new gear. But, more importantly, they will be far better
protected.” Both Julie and Andy’s new leathers contain
CE approved body armour which provides superior impact resistance
combined with comfort and flexibility.
Safety is the priority of course, but comfort is also important.
Nowadays, leather is not the only material to wear. Man-made fabrics
such as Kevlar, Cordura and Gore-Tex can offer better weather protection
against heat, cold and water. The key factors are strength –
protective clothing must maintain its integrity in the event of
a crash; abrasion resistance - ability to slide instead of grabbing
tarmac or concrete (which could tumble the rider, resulting in greater
injury); and the ability to stretch and breathe for comfort.
The only item which is a legal requirement at the moment is a helmet.
But getting the proper jackets, trousers, boots and gloves (and
it’s not size that matters here Andy – but durability
and knuckle protection!) can save your life.
So after their makeover courtesy of Devitt, Julie and Andy not
only look miles better, they’re much safer too.
